This basket is hand-crocheted and comes with an image of the maker along with a brief story.

Nanis Kathambi Njeru, born in 1999, lives in Tharaka Nithi County, and is married with a young child. Nanis engages in farming, growing various crops, including maize, millet, and pigeon peas. She also has three goats for livestock. Her home consists of two temporary mud structures, one housing the main living area and the other serving as a kitchen. Though her relationship with her husband is good, she has faced some challenges with gender-based violence but has managed them through communication and the support of her friends.

In addition to farming, Nanis has been making and selling crocheted crochet baskets, which has provided her with extra income. She has spent this money on livestock, which she sold to purchase more land, and on improving her home. Through this project, she has not only gained financial independence but also developed a sense of accomplishment and recognition. Basket-making has become a craft that keeps her busy and has even led her to start offering hairdressing services for pay.

Nanis has aspirations to open a beauty salon, build a permanent house, and ensure her children receive a good education. She is proud of her work and is grateful to the buyers of her baskets, expressing her desire to meet them one day. She hopes that her children will have good educational opportunities and secure, sustainable employment in the future. The project has broadened her horizons, and she feels fulfilled by her achievements and the improvements it has brought to her life.
