This basket is hand-crocheted by Cicilia Kang'aria. Crochet work is a traditional craft in Tharaka Nithi, Kenya.

Cicilia Kang'aria is happily married with six children. Education for girls was not valued when she was young, so she only made it through class one. She is happy making the baskets and enjoys spending time with the women. She says that when they make baskets they get energy from each other and support each other’s work.

Her husband has been very sick, but she has been able to fund his health care and support the family through this project.

Cicilia would like to thank you for buying her kiondo. She says she would love it if you and she could be friends!.

Merry-Go-Strong (501(c)(3)) and the Tharaka Women’s Welfare Program (TWWP) work with rural women in Tharaka Nithi Kenya. MGS provides the acrylic yarn to help the women get started and then buys the baskets when they are completed. TWWP manages the adult literacy groups and monitors the well-being of the women.

Proceeds from the resale of the baskets go to initiatives like illuminating homes, providing water collection systems, and building a maker space for workshops and skill-building opportunities.

This basket comes with a photo of Cicilia holding the basket she made.
