This basket is hand-crocheted by Florence M. Crochet work is a traditional craft in Tharaka Nithi, Kenya.

Florence's father passed when she was 10 and being the first girl in the family, she had to help her mother take care of her sibling. To make ends meet, Florence and her elder brother would dig pit latrines, and work in people’s farms.

Florence was among the first people to enroll in the Kiumbe Adult Literacy group which is sponsored by the Tharaka Women's Welfare Program (TWWP) in Tharaka Nithi Kenya. She has been very successful making baskets and now lives in a stone house. She is also able to pay her son's school fees. Her dream of owning a business came true, she now owns a dressmaking shop.

A bit about the project:

The Basket Ladies is a subsidiary of Merry-Go-Strong (501(c)(3)). We work with the Tharaka Women’s Welfare Program (TWWP) to help rural women who are part of adult literacy groups in Tharaka Nithi Kenya earn an income.

MGS provides the acrylic yarn to help the women get started and then buys the baskets when they are completed. Proceeds from the resale of the baskets go to supporting initiatives that help the women and families.

This basket has a photo of Florence M. holding the basket she made.
