This basket is hand-crocheted by Winfred Mukami. Crochet work is a traditional craft in Tharaka Nithi, Kenya.

Winfred Mukami is married with three children. She was able to finish school and receive her certificate. The Tharaka Women's Welfare Program has then supported her through taking a few more courses to become certified as a teacher. As a result, she has learned English, allowing her to interpret for others in her community. She says she’s been able to help a lot of people because of her education and she values that she can make a positive difference in other people's lives.

Merry-Go-Strong (501(c)(3)) and the Tharaka Women’s Welfare Program (TWWP) work with rural women in Tharaka Nithi Kenya. MGS provides the acrylic yarn to help the women get started and then buys the baskets when they are completed. TWWP manages the adult literacy groups and monitors the well-being of the women.

Proceeds from the resale of the baskets go to initiatives like illuminating homes, providing water collection systems, and building a maker space for workshops and skill-building opportunities.
