This basket is hand-crocheted by Beninya.

Beninya is married with four children, three boys and one girl. She feels very lucky that this program has helped them to live in harmony and much more peace at home. They can afford food and buy new clothing. Her kids used to get sent home because they couldn’t pay school fees, but now they stay in school. They used to borrow land, and within the last few years have been able to afford land for farming and have built a house on their property.

Beninya says this project has significantly raised her and her family’s living standards. She is also forever grateful for the women she’s met; they are her friends for life because of their endless support.

Beninya is a member of the women’s adult literacy group in Kuimbe Village in Kenya. She joined so that she could learn to read and write. Being a member of this adult literacy group provides so much more than an education. It gives the women the opportunity to learn from each other and to provide support for those who need help and advice.

The women also have the option to learn how to crochet, which is a traditional craft in Tharaka Nithi, Kenya. This income-generating opportunity has been a source of pride for the women. Many can send their children to school, repair their homes, buy new clothes, animals, and food, and get proper health care.

Each Basket has a photo of the woman holding the basket she made.
