This basket is hand-crocheted by Mary Kamunda.
Mary is happily married, with a young daughter they adore. Mary says this project has improved her quality of life so much. She has built a new house and bought chickens, goats, and a new plot of land. Her family eats and lives well without any fear now. Mary wants help to drill a borehole. She says it is rare in her area but wants to try it as a way to bring water to people in her family and compound.
Mary says is passionate about the way this project influences women’s lives. She wants to continue to work hard on improving her skills, along with spreading the message of this project to other mothers. She hopes the project lives on and is passed down to generations of daughters to come because she wants her daughter to grow up confident and happy.
Mary is a member of the women’s adult literacy group in Kiumbe Village in Kenya. She joined so that she could learn to read and write. Being a member of this adult literacy group provides so much more than an education. It gives the women the opportunity to learn from each other and to provide support for those who need help and advice.
The women also have the option to learn how to crochet, which is a traditional craft in Tharaka Nithi, Kenya. This income-generating opportunity has been a source of pride for the women. Many can send their children to school, repair their homes, buy new clothes, animals, and food, and get proper health care.
