Imelda Kanono, born in 1981, is from Iria Ria Mbogo/Kanjoro village and is a mother of two children, aged 21 and 14. She owns a four-acre piece of land, which she farms, growing crops like maize, millet, and pigeon peas. Her home consists of brick structures without electricity but powered by solar energy, and though not plastered, she has been making gradual improvements. She also keeps livestock, including six chickens and a goat, and collects her own water. Through her earnings from basket weaving, she has been able to pay for her daughter’s medical expenses, buy food, household utensils, and even invest in livestock and home improvements.

Imelda has been making both crocheted and crocheted Kiondo baskets for years, selling them through Merry-Go-Strong. She finds joy not only in the financial benefits but also in the learning experience and social interaction that comes with basket-making. With her earnings, she has acquired iron sheets and built new structures for her home. Her aspirations include ensuring her children receive a good education so they can support her in the future. She expresses deep gratitude to those who purchase her baskets and hopes for continued support to help uplift her community.
